Requiem For A Fallen King: A Tribute To Elvin Jones was conceived in September of 2004 as composer and drummer, Lomax, was remembering the master drummer on the first anniversary of his birth after Elvin’s passing in May. Privileged to spend a little time with the master, Mark was deeply affected by Jones’ absence giving rise to the four-part suite that comprises this recording from a live performance in 2013 by a wonderful quartet. Tenor saxophonist Edwin Bayard, pianist Dr. William Menefield, and bassist Dean Hulett premiered the piece with the composer in late 2004, and are here playing the piece for the third time in almost ten years. Such is the life of artists who continue to grow in the margins of the American cultural landscape.
